Everyone should have a "Sally"

A care home on the Isle of Wight recently shared this beautiful story of the life-changing impact on one of their residents thanks to our volunteer befriender:

"Mary had been living with her son and daughter in law, but after a time it became clear that she needed more care and she moved to our care home. After Mary moved here, her son became very ill and passed away, and her other sons live on the mainland and are not able to visit.  Mary was spending more and more time in her room and did not want to engage with the other residents so we felt she was become increasingly isolated.  When Sally started visiting, the change in Mary was amazing. If you happened to go upstairs when Sally was here you would hear shrieks of laughter coming from Mary's room and they would chat away for ages.  It has been lovely to see their friendship develop and it has made a huge difference to the quality of Mary’s life. I think everyone should have a Sally in their life.

Embracing Age has been so supportive to our care home. The majority of our residents have dementia and the wonderful craft ladies have made little creatures to hang on walking frames so that we can easily identify whose is whose. They also made some lovely little bags to pop over the handles so that our residents can put tissues, spectacles and bits and bobs in.

Sadly we do have residents that for whatever reason have no visits or little contact with their families and the cards of kindness have been a lovely treat to have.  All in all,  Embracing Age has been wonderful and special thanks to Rebecca for her continued support and understanding."

New ways for you to help residents enjoy meaningful connections!

This winter we're bringing you even more ways to help more older people “feel alive” and know they are "not alone" by enjoying regular meaningful connections with our trained volunteers.

You can make a big difference over the next few months by:

* Bidding in our Silent Auction - from Friday 14 - Sunday 30 November you can bid in our silent auction - we have some amazing Lots on offer for you to enjoy whilst raising vital funds. You can start browsing the Lots here now (more items coming soon!) and save the date to start bidding on the 14th!

* Donating - you can also donate directly to our winter appeal which has launched here - whatever you can give will help more older people feel valued and connected next year by enabling us to recruit and train more volunteers.

* Fundraising - whether hosting a small coffee morning, or taking on a sponsored challenge, "every penny" raised will make a vital difference. Contact Sarah Waller on sarah@embracingage.org.uk today to get our new fundraising pack and set up a sponsorship page here.

* Raising free donations with your online shopping - we've signed up with Give as You Live so you can now generate FREE donations for us, at no extra cost to you, whenever you shop online at over 6,000 stores! You can sign up here today in just 2 minutes.

* Spreading the word - when you tell your friends and network about us, you're helping grow our reach through potential volunteers and other supporters, and raising awareness of the needs of older care home residents. Who do you know who would be great to get involved in Embracing Age today?

Knitting Joy in West Sussex
Jane, our West Sussex area co-ordinator has been out and about spreading the word about Embracing Age with stands at several garden centres and cafes, and featuring in local community magazines. It's great to see enquiries growing for befriending and crafting, with 14 new applicants in the pipeline to join the existing volunteer team. We loved this photo from the Knit and Natter Group at St Andrew's, Tarring (near Worthing), who have knitted 11 beautiful lap blankets for local care home residents.
New project blooms in Richmond
We were so overjoyed when the flower team at St Mary's Church Twickenham sprang into action after hearing our charity presentation there and chatting to us about a suitable care home to bless that day!

"We were very inspired and wanted you to know that something lovely resulted from your heartfelt words. As mentioned, by chance we had a small surplus of bought, fresh flowers and foliage from our display ... From the photos you can see that we didn't hang about. Within an hour, Nightingale House were gifted a few simple bunches and a couple of pretty jam jars of lovely blooms. The young carer who opened the door was so happy."

Thank you to the talented and generous flower team for this beautiful spontaneous gesture - and the wonderful news that the team plans to grow this into an ongoing project gifting fresh festival flowers at Christmas and beyond.

If you have a love of flower arranging and would like to start a similar initiative to bless a care home near you, do get in touch for our top tips on getting started!
Sparking joyful summer reminisces

Over the summer months, an incredible 850 postcards were sent to residents at 56 care homes across Hampshire under Zoe's new Summer Postcard Project. Huge thanks to everyone who took part by making beautiful postcards or taking the time to choose and buy a postcard to share a view of somewhere they visited, and for all the wonderful written greetings which stimulated interesting conversations and reminiscences. Below is a small selection of the thanks we received from the care homes:

"The cards gave the residents the chance to reminisce of places they spent their holidays. For some of the residents this was a touching thought as they have no family and they felt they were being thought of. I personally think this was a fab idea and the people who sent the cards have made my residents feel special and for this I am grateful."

"Residents really enjoyed receiving the postcards and reading them. It was a real boost for their mental well being and a real talking point as we were able to take to those in communal areas as well as those nursed in bed."

"The residents enjoyed knowing they were sent by children, this allowed them to start to reminisce about their own children and grandchildren, their faces lit up and they were happily chatting for hours after."

How you can bring cheer to care home residents this Christmas

There are lots of ways you can make a difference, from making craft gifts and cards, to helping deliver in your area. "Unfailing Love" - devotions for dementia caregivers

September was World Alzheimer's month so it seems an appropriate time to recommend a wonderful book of bite-sized devotions for carers of those living with dementia. "Unfailing Love" is written by Robin Thomson, a former Bible teacher in India who then cared for his wife after she was diagnosed with Alzheimer's, and is described by Tina English as:

"This poignant book offers a lifeline of hope and comfort to dementia caregivers. Through its tapestry of bite-sized biblical reflections interwoven with real-life stories, it provides much-needed solace and reminds caregivers that they are not alone."

If you are caring for a loved one or know a carer who might benefit from Carers Connected, please encourage them to contact Sarah Smith about joining us - she'll happily answer any queries about the gatherings or using Zoom, and offers connection via the Weekly Message even if you can't attend a gathering.

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

As well as our Christmas gift projects, we're always looking for more volunteers to support us throughout the year, so if you're interested in a longer term way to have fun getting involved with us and make a big difference in the lives of older people, do read on!

Many of these roles can be done from wherever you are in the country and offer a range of time requirements to fit around how much (or little!) time you can offer:

  • Could you host Carers Connected Zoom sessions?
  • Could you spare 1 hour a week to visit care home residents in Richmond, West Sussex, Hampshire or the Isle of Wight? We urgently need adult volunteers to meet referrals for residents in these areas.
  • Could you help build links between schools or community groups and their local care home?
  • Do you enjoy community fundraising?
  • Are you good with IT systems, especially websites and CRM systems, and could offer some back office volunteer support?

You can find full details of these and many more opportunities via the button below.
